Our team of design experts has created beautiful modern metal cable railings, intricate wrought iron scrollwork railings, suspended glass railings and many others besides, so it’s all the more exciting when a customer comes to us with a unique vision.
A homeowner in the city of Naperville, IL – just a short drive outside of Chicago – had reached out to us because they were remodeling their home and wanted a custom set of railings created and installed throughout the home. They have been following SMW on social media for some time and really liked the projects they saw there, but they wanted something different from everything else they saw for their home. They trusted that the designers at SMW would be able to make their vision into a reality.
The customer loved the timeless look of black metal railings for stairs, but they wanted to soften the look by combining the black iron of the railing with a light wood handrail that would match the wood they used on the staircase steps, as well as throughout their home.
One practice that’s fairly common amongst “custom” metal shops across the country is that they purchase standard pickets, create a custom frame around them and call the whole thing custom. This particular project allowed our craftsmen to show off their skills in every detail of the project. The custom design that they created and the customer approved required three layers of metal lines to be randomly yet strategically arranged within each of the railing frames to result in finished pieces that were both functional as well as beautiful. Each of the lines used was individually measured, created and fitted to create the flawless woven look of the finished design.
One all of the pieces were carefully created and assembled we finished off all the pieces with a coat of classic satin black paint and left everything to cure while we got to work on the wooden handrails. Combining the softer look of wood with the industrial style of wrought iron has been a popular trend for the last few years. As the wood throughout the customer’s home is light, we settled on the beautiful look of blonde ash for the handrails. All of the handrails were carefully measured and cut to fit perfectly upon installation.
Once ready, all the pieces were delivered to the customer’s home and installed on their staircase. The pieces included a railing along the railing at the top of the staircase, which connected to a two part railing along the right side of the stairs and a separate railing along the left side at the bottom of the stairs to provide stability at the base. As you can see from the pictures the finished look matches the stylish esthetic of the rest of the home perfectly and the customer was thrilled with the results.
