French Country Wrought Iron Railing in Evanston, IL

R73

French Country is one of those styles people recognize before they can name it: round bar instead of square, a little softness in the lines, the kind of classic wrought iron that looks right on an older home along a tree-lined Evanston street. This interior railing is round bar painted black in that vein.

On a railing like this the round bar does the work. It reads warmer and more traditional than the flat, modern profiles, and it sits comfortably in a home with crown molding, wood trim, and some age to it. Black keeps it grounded so it frames the staircase instead of shouting over it.

Evanston has a lot of houses that are eighty or a hundred years old, and the staircases in them have settled over the decades. We template on site and build to the actual stair rather than the original drawings, so the railing lands tight to the treads and the wall. The wrought iron is primed first and finished in black, which for an interior piece is the right call and leaves you able to touch up a scuff down the road.

If you are restoring an older Evanston home and want a railing that fits the era instead of fighting it, send Signature Metal Works a few photos and we will tell you what is realistic.
